Nature Mobile one of many free options for families this summer

Ever touched the pelt of a bobcat? Learned why owls hunt at night? Identified the flowers growing in and around your local park?

A lot of children haven’t. And that’s the whole point of the THPRD Nature Mobile.

The Park District’s newest outreach vehicle visits apartment complexes, community events, and parks near schools. It brings the mysteries of the great outdoors to underserved children, typically those aged 3-13 who aren’t able to come to us.

Ultimately, the goal of the Nature Mobile is to help children connect to their natural environment and build respect for it. And when they do, chances are they’ll want to preserve it for themselves and future generations.

Look for the brightly painted Nature Mobile throughout the community this summer. It will be joined by our two Rec Mobiles, which offer face painting, hula hoops, sports and much more.

Oh, and did I mention that the Park District provides all three vehicles for no charge?

We’re proud to offer these free opportunities at a time when so many families are struggling economically. Need more penny-pinching ideas? Visit your local park. Hike or bike a trail. Explore a natural area. There’s no admission fee.

The same goes for many Park District events this summer, most notably Party in the Park on July 31; it will offer something fun (and free) for everyone. And don’t forget our popular Concert and Theater in the Park series, which will light up parks district-wide on summer evenings from late June to mid-August – again, for no charge.

Check out www.thprd.org for information about these and other free events. Or give us a call at 503/645-6433. Enjoy your summer with THPRD. We look forward to serving you.
